The summer can be a time for rest, excitement, and long days of fun in the sun, but it also comes with some seasonal health risks. This summer is predicted to be one of the hottest on record, so protecting your health and well-being is so important! Here are 5 health and wellness tips for 2023 that will lead you into a healthy and happy summer.

Our Top 5 Health and Wellness Tips for 2023
1) Drink lots of water!
As we are approaching the arrival of summer heat and record-breaking temperatures, dehydration can present a real problem. Which puts water consumption at the top of our list for health and wellness tips for 2023! Dehydration is what happens when our bodies are not consuming enough water or fluids to account for the water lost.

Your body can lose water in many ways including exercising and sweating, fever, increased urination, and drinking alcohol. Some common symptoms of dehydration are muscle fatigue, dizziness, a confused or dazed state of awareness, thirst, and dry mouth. Dehydration can be very dangerous and can definitely put a damper on your summer day!

According to Harvard Medical School, most healthy people should drink between four to six cups of water daily, however, this amount may vary based on the individual. Aim to drink 64 oz. of water a day on days without heavy exercise or sun/heat exposure and 94 oz. when you are active and in the sun!

Tip: Encourage yourself to drink more water by adding lemon and other citrus to your water.

2) Protect you skin and wear sunscreen.
While some exposure to sunlight is good for your health and provides you with an excellent source of Vitamin D, too much can cause a great risk of skin damage and cancer. There are two different types of sunlight: UVA rays and UVB rays. UVA rays penetrate deep into your skin and can cause wrinkles, sunspots, and premature aging. UVB rays cause the skin damage and redness known as sunburn.

Tip: Make sure you are applying sunscreen daily and don’t forget to reapply sunscreen at least every two hours, and more often if you’re sweating or jumping in and out of the water. Protect your skin and stay safe in the heat.

3) Exercise daily!
Getting outside and getting your body moving has several health benefits. Physical activity can improve your brain health, help manage weight, reduce the risk of disease, strengthen bones and muscles, and improve your overall health and wellness. According to the Mayo Clinic you should aim to get 30 minutes of moderate physical activity every day. While getting outside is important, be careful in the summer months when the heat advisory is increasing.

Tip: Early mornings or late afternoons are great times to get outside and take a walk when temperatures are lower. Be safe and enjoy an active summer!

4) Take advantage of in-season produce!
‘Tis the season for some of the best and freshest produce. Eating whole and organic foods is so good for your health and wellness and is one of our top picks when it comes to health and wellness tips for 2023.
